I found this good-condition softcover at a local Savers thrift shop, and was tempted by the cover - which, among other things, has an illustration of a hoopoe catching a dragonfly. It's an anthology by an India-born author who moved to Brookline, MA - making her practically local!

The stories are loosely linked, mostly set in the same Indian-American community in the Boston area, with characters from one story making brief appearances in others - but, for the most part, the stories stand alone. They touch on many aspects of Indian-American experiences, from young people facing prejudice in school to aging people trying to adjust to dramatic changes of life and culture - and, in some cases, opting out of the new ways entirely. There are other aspects to the stories that are applicable to everyone: friendships, love affairs, parent/child difficulties, the loss of a job... Some tales are funny, some sad, others bittersweet, and all very human. I enjoyed the collection very much.
