I read this on this past snowy Sunday. It was as much fun as I remembered. Abdullah is a carpet merchant in Zanzib who is not content with his life. He daydreams about being a prince who was stolen as a child and rescued by traveling carpet merchants. After he buys a threadbare carpet from a stranger he finds himself involved in adventures beyond his imagination.

He wakes up after falling asleep on the carpet in the gardens of the Sultan and meets the only daughter Flower-In-The-Night who has been secluded her entire life due to a prophecy made at her birth. Abdullah visits her several times, and witnesses her abduction by a huge Djinn. The Sultan captures Abdullah and does not believe what he is told about his daughter's disappearance. He throws Abdullah in the dungeon, where he is rescued by the flying carpet. Abdullah's adventure's take him to the desert where he meets a band of thieves and gains a genie who grants a wish a day.

It turns out that Flowers-in-the Night has been one of many princesses from around the world who have been kidnapped. Abdullah and an old Stangian soldier are working together to try and rescue Abdullah's Princess as well as prevent the capture of the young princess of Ingary. During their travels to Kingbury to warn the king, they find a black cat and her kitten who turn out to be the ensorceled Sophie Pendragon, wife of the missing royal sorcerer Howl. when they return to the inn, after Sophie being transformed back into a human by the other Royal wizard, the Wizard Suliman, they discover both baby Morgan and the soldier gone.

Abdullah and Sophie then order the carpet to take them to Morgan. The carpet does so, taking them far into the sky, to the castle in the air, which is merely Wizard Howl's castle, having been greatly enlarged. There they meet the stolen princesses and plot with them to escape the castle. Led by Abdullah, they overpower the two Djinn, freeing Hasruel who banishes his brother. Flower-of-the-Night had by then wished the genie free, who turned out to be Sophie's husband, the Wizard Howl.

left in the little free library

I picked this up from a little free library outside of the King Arts magnet school. As I was walking past I noticed that the door was broken and the window gone, possibly a victim of the windy weather we have been having. As I was walking and on the bus I could only take a few to try and save. This was left propped up outside the new Target in downtown Evanston in the hallway to the parking garage elevators.
