Monkey King tells the story of 28-year-old Sally Wang, a Chinese-American woman whose mental breakdown and sojourn in a hospital set her firmly on the path of memory. Her recovery takes place against a rich tapestry of culture and personality that unfolds before our eyes under the Monkey King's ghostly shadow. For Sally has been living with a terrible family secret, one that has shattered her life. How she pulls together her Chinese and American identities into a cohesive self and rejoins the land of the living is recounted with a wry and refreshing honesty.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this. I found a wonderful memoir style story. Sally is trying to get through the pain and rebuilding of her self and her life after a mental breakdown. The story delves into some very heavy topics throughout it's tale, but are handled delicately and the characters were well developed.

While the content of this story was often very intense, Chao made it very readable. It really conveyed the complexities of a second-generation immigrant living in New England. Chao is a wonderful writer and you fall entirely into the world of her story and the mind of her protagonist. Highly recommended. Reserved for the "Wild Things" boombox, which will be coming my way relatively soon.
