The Horizontal World: Growing Up Wild In the Middle of Nowhere

I got this fair-condition softcover from a local Savers thrift shop, attracted by the far-horizon/hayfield cover image. It's the author's memoir of her early life on a farm in North Dakota, in the form of collected essays; some deal directly with her family and its history, back to pioneer days, while others contrast city life with that on the farm. There's a chapter on having hit a deer on a family trip, with notes to the effect that everyone has "hit a deer" stories and if you mention that you hit one, everyone else will chime in with their anecdotes before you can get yours off the ground. (This is, to some extent, true; I will not mention my own hit-a-deer story here. Oops.) And the book closes with a wry nod to the old "salesman and the farmer's daughter" jokes, one that turns out rather better for all parties than most of them do!

We received this book in our LFL in west Greenwich Rhode Island. Hoping someone comes and picks it up! I have a long reading list so I don’t think I’ll get to it this time around.
