A day that lives in infamy. Or at least in the minds of Americans who know a little something about WWII. Some believe the United States knew everything about the encrypted Japanese classified communications. In truth, we only had access to the diplomatic correspondence. The Japanese had multiple encryptions for different divisions of the military, none of which were accessible. The then-current mindset of the U.S. political and military leaders was simple: the Japanese were backward intellectually, possessed outdated planes and warships, and could never make it all the way to Hawaii without being spotted, did not have the capacity to refuel mid-sea, and had few aircraft carriers. Plus, torpedoes would not function in the shallow waters of Pearl Harbor. The United States was wrong on all counts. The head of the Army in Honolulu assumed the Navy was carrying out reconnaissance flights when the political situation made it clear we would soon be at war. It wasn't. The Navy assumed the Army was picking up radar signals from incoming aircraft/ships 24/7. It wasn't. The dispatches coming from Washington were confusing and unclear and nobody followed up on orders to "begin defensive deployments" sent to all Pacific outposts in November. We could have had a fighting chance...
