Synopsis:
"An elderly artist and her six-year-old granddaughter while away a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland. Gradually, the two learn to adjust to each other's fears, whims and yearnings for independence, and a fierce yet understated love emerges - one that encompasses not only the summer inhabitants but the island itself, with its mossy rocks, windswept firs and unpredictable seas."

What a lovely book! Funny, interesting, painting a beautiful picture of a Scandinavian summer.
It has been a while since I last read a book in one sitting... This one I just couldn't put down.

Wow I am so lucky to be the lucky ....?.... to receive this book. I love the Moomins series so when I found out the author wrote this book, I want to read it too!

Thank you so much Boekentrol for thinking of me. So glad to see you again in Mainz as well as getting to spend more time getting to know you. Not always easy at a big convention!

Flying on an old airplane can be a good thing: without personal tv and phone charger, I end up reading a few good books on the way back home.

So glad to have read this excellent book! While I as a city girl may not enjoy living on a small, quiet, remote and cold island so close to nature, I like how Jansson lovingly describe the life there, and the interaction between the grandmother and child. The moments will feel very idyllic and blissful, but Sophia's sudden bursts will remind me that she is a child who is suffering the loss of her mother, and fearful of the impermanence of life. BTW, seriously, what's up with the father? He is mostly in the background and doesn't get to utter a word in the whole book!

Thanks again Boekentrol, for the lovely postcard and RABCK. I've been to Sweden or Finland, and this book may make me consider braving the cold and attend the Finland BC con in two years.
