I've been reading very complex, unique, innovative books like Paul Beatty's 'The Sellout' and China Mieville's 'The Last Days of New Paris' lately, so I hope this won't be changing how I feel about simpler and straightforward stories like this one. The theme here is definitely MOTHERS of all kinds and types, all of the female characters are mothers in one way or another, including the older church ladies that are referenced as "the mothers" throughout the book. Of course, mothers are universal. The story, if a little predictable, has flashes of insight here and there, said in such a way that I could appreciate the book just for those. Put this on the shelf next to Angela Flournoy's 'The Turner House' and Anne Tyler's 'A Spool of Blue Thread'. Delicate examinations of families and their histories.
