' I need poison… now… this very night…'
' But why come to me ?' Gunilda protested.
(Prologue, Anno Domini 1160)

You've no doubt been told that mandrakes scream when they are dragged from the earth.

p. 57:
- But what is sealed ? Elena demanded.
- There's a shadow on the heels of the boy.
- Everyone has a shadow.
- Not like this. Not a human shadow, the shadow of a fox. The fox is the Devil's sign.

Middle Ages. How to rule. See page 67. "Roll the body into one of the bog pools, of course, what the devil do you think they were created for ?"

Anno Domini MCCXI, 1211 CE… John Lackland reigned as King of England (1199-1216) He was the youngest of five sons of King Henry II of England and Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine (French: Aliénor d'Aquitaine*) He was appointed Lord of Ireland in 1177.

An idea of medieval England… Noblemen, villeins, predators… John "Lackland" at daggers drawn with the Pope: one can hardly imagine medieval England living without mass, without rites (except baptism and last rites) because of the "Interdict".

Pope Innocent III also placed the kingdom of England under an interdict for six years between March 1208 and May 1213, after King John refused to accept the pope's appointee Stephen Langton as Archbishop of Canterbury.

Some runes appear on the gallows (book cover), u, z, f, w, a, r. But it's not a word (or if it is, which one ?). It has nothing to do with the title, the author or any character of the book. In Geneva (Switzerland) some runes ornate Borges' grave at the Cimetière des Rois.

I do not intend to spoil anything. Eels, cages, Lady Anne, "Holly" are to be discovered.

Picture: anguilla vulgaris, European eel.

(Margaritae sermo.) = Be patient and tough; someday this pain will be useful to you.

I really don't need another thick book but I did enjoy the Company of Liars, so could not resist...

Journal Entry 15 by over-the-moon at Lausanne, Vaud Switzerland on Thursday, September 05, 2019
Each chapter is preceded by a section taken from the "mandrake herbal" which is ancient lore about not only plants but also animals such as the fox, insects and staples like bread. My mother always cut a cross in the stalk of a cabbage before cooking it and I wonder if it is true, the story that this was to prevent evil spirits from hiding in the tightly curled leaves.
The heroine of the story, Elena, is in possession of a mandrake, a human-shaped root that comes to life when fed with certain bodily fluids... An innocent girl, she is manipulated by various other characters, sins of others are lain upon her, they visit her in her dreams. It's a complicated tale of war, crusaders, treachery, espionage, prostitution, witchcraft, plotting and political wrangling, torture, murder and deceit, set largely in and around Yarmouth (when it was an island) and Norwich. Plenty of action and medieval atmosphere, recounted by the mandrake itself, Yadua.
Interesting background information at the end, and a glossary.
Strange that part of the cover design depicts runes, whereas the symbols mentioned in the book, on the amulet, are Hebrew letters. They don't correspond to the Viking runes in my rune book, nor to the Old English, Germanic or Etruscan runes. Maybe just a fantasy on the part of the cover designer.

Even though there is a hanging, I'm not quite sure why this title was chosen. The curse begins with Warren, who brings the mandrake from the Holy Land.
