'With her career, live-in boyfriend and loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the rebellious young woman who, over a decade ago, got mixed up with drug runners and delivered a suitcase of drug money to Europe. But when she least experts it, her reckless past catches up with her: convicted and sentenced to fifteen months.....'

An interesting read. Not as tough an experience that I expected Piper to have, but she was in a minimal security facility. I thought many of those jailed, like her, maybe should not have been, or at least have had a lesser sentence. Piper gives the USA high incarceration rate. Another reason to make one nervous to visit the USA, even though I would never smuggle drugs and the like. I was a little confused when Piper referred to so many by their nationality. Italian, etc. Were they foreigners who were jailed in the USA, or were they Americans with say Italian, etc ancestry. I have friends here in Australia of various ancestries, but they would just be called Australian. An example; I have a friend who is born in Italy; his first language is Italian, but he would NEVER be referred to as Italian, only Australian.
I found Piper's constant mentioning that she was blonde annoying; basically that blue eyed blonds are normally not the sort of people to do bad things. Really!
It's about time that drugs were legalised and given under medical proscription. The so called war on drugs has failed. If users could get legal, affordable drugs, cutting out the criminals, the crime rate would drop dramatically. There would be no need for these druggies to push drugs onto others and so likely less people would take up the habit. Less crime, less people in jail, and the system would cease to support the illegal drug trade. And imagine what the money saved by not jailing people could be spent on. Hospitals, schools...

Piper got caught up in the drug trade and was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
This story is about the women she mixed with, and some of their stories were sad. This book is well written and keeps you reading up to the end.
