What are we all looking for in life? Love? Acceptance? Friendship? Meaning?

Davidson has produced a massive outpouring on all these topics wrapped up in an improbable love story. Marianne comes across the protagonist, lying in his hospital bed in the burn ward, thinking over the futility of his life and consumed by a burning need to know 'Is that all there is?' The answer, of course is not that simple.

Our lives are made up of all our experiences, and in Marianne, our protagonist (and the reader) is confronted by a force outside of our ken. She is slightly off center, and clearly different from all around her, yet she is filled with a purpose that repells all outside expectations of her actions. It is through Marianne that the narrative goes forth, with her odd tales and calm confidence that slowly fill the book and her audience with meaning.

In her worldview, nothing is meaningless, from great pain comes purification, if only we can hold ourselves open to the possibility. Slowly, the protagonist of the novel starts to understand her viewpoint. A wonderful character, and I will remember the Christmas party in the Hospital cafeteria with wonder for a long time. Fly far little book!
