Book description

Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn't change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family; but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Now a full-fledged Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits, and along with Rukia--who is slowly regaining her powers--it's Ichigo's job to protect the innocent from Hollows and help the spirits themselves find peace.The paranormal action-adventure begins now!

My Thoughts
I bought this on a recommendation from a friend who LOVES this manga series. I thought the 3 for 1 was a very good idea and the whole product was value for money.
I found it very interesting and had a good plot and storyline with some likeable characters that in a way we're rather relatable. The drawings and illustrations where also very good :) So all in all a very good book/ manga and worth every penny

This got here safely. I've had friends rave about the anime so look forward to reading these three volumes of the manga.

A few years back a friend brought over the first couple of episodes of Bleach and another anime. We watched the first episode of Bleach and decided not to continue watching for a reason I don't even remember now.

So I went into this book with some trepidation. I also made the mistake of starting this right after reading the beautify illustrated Monstress so took a little while to get into the drawing style of this book. I really really enjoyed this quite a bit.

Thanks for sharing it with me Abi-Gibby. I think with me experience with the anime I probably wouldn't have picked this up and it is a storyline that I really have enjoyed.

I'm claiming this hefty softcover from the manga/graphic novel bookbox. I've read a few volumes from the series, including Vol. 1, but hadn't read Vols. 2 or 3 yet, so I'll take advantage of the opportunity!

Vol. 1 introduces the main character, high school student Ichigo, whose ability to see spirits causes him quite a few headaches; not only does he feel compelled to help the lost or distraught spirits if he can, but he has to fight off the bullies who tease him for speaking to thin air.

But then he meets Rukia, a diminutive but powerful Soul Reaper, who informs him that huge, nasty spirits are being drawn to the area - spirits that can't be assuaged by memorials. And when she's wounded trying to fight one, she recruits Ichigo as a "substitute Soul Reaper", handing over her sword and (inadvertently) most of her power. And then he has to battle the spirit of someone near and dear to a friend of his; seems this gig isn't going to be as easy as he thought...

The next volumes feature Ichigo's learning curve as he balances his school and home life with the ever-interfering Hollows. Along the way he gets some help from his friend Chad, who seems to be able to sense the Hollows - and deal some damage with his immense punching power - even though he isn't a Soul Reaper himself. There are some really frightening bits involving Ichigo's past, especially surrounding the death of his mother; it turns out that his recent encounters are not the first time he's been affected by Hollows, and the one that killed his mother is apparently still quite active and malevolent.

In between the battles and scary bits there's plenty of humor, mostly slapstick - Ichigo's schoolmates are confronted with his own odd behavior and then with that of his body-double, who - at first - is so very cheerful and clean-cut (and non-Ichigo!) that it takes everyone aback. I like the interactions between the schoolmates, whether it's the deluded wannabe womanizer Asano or cheerful Orihime, tough girl Tatsuki or the seriously-flirtatious Chizuru.

This volume ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, as the exceedingly nasty Hollow they've been fighting gets away and plans to go after Ichigo again. So - business as usual? {wry grin}

[I enjoyed the anime adaptation on TV - it tends to be leisurely, as in a single battle taking months of episodes, but it has its charms! There's a TV Tropes page for the series - manga and anime - with some entertaining tidbits.]
