I found this fair-condition hardcover, translated from its original German, at a local Savers thrift shop, and picked it up for the next "Talk Like a Pirate" release challenge. It's a tale in a fantasy setting that's much like the real-world Caribbean, but with special abilities and magic. Among these: some people can literally walk on water, and are dubbed "polliwogs" by the region's pirates. It would seem to be a very handy talent in an island setting! But for some reason, most of the known polliwogs have been killed, leaving young Jolly as - she thinks - the only survivor. Then she meets Munk, who's also a polliwog, but has been in hiding because of the danger - and because his parents don't want him working for pirates, even though they're the ones who value polliwogs the most.
