And then they go mad again...
The book opens in the middle of a gruesome scene of a boy about to smash a girl's head with a shovel, as she chows down on another student; then we flash back to "an hour ago", and meet the main cast. Typical high school students, more or less, with main character Akira fretting about his crush on Kurumi, who has a crush of her own on Akira's friend Reiji. The boys are skilled athletes in different sports, which will come in handy when they have to fight off their own classmates and teachers.
Why the plague begins, we don't know yet, but it's as devastating as one might expect. Yet the realization that the afflicted are NOT dead or mindless, simply under the influence of the plague, renders the usual zombie-destroying techniques morally questionable - not that this stops Takeru, a student who seems quite gleeful at the chaos and violence that's erupting around him.
By the end of this volume, most of the students - afflicted and non - seem to know that the illness is cyclical, but what its timing is, where it came from, and what if anything can cure it are questions without answers. In the meantime, the non-afflicted are trying to keep safe from their former friends and classmates.
Lots of action and violence, friendships strained to the breaking point, loyalties tested and character flaws revealed. And that's just the first volume; where will it go from here?
