Two young saleswomen in a high-end London dress shop buy some oxalic acid to clean a straw hat. One of the manager's two assistants eats a plate of poisoned curry - is it accident, suicide or murder? Inspector Charlesworth of Scotland Yard is assigned to the case. The shop is rife with jealousies, rivalries, and loyalties; everyone from the temperamental dress designer to the dead woman's endlessly weeping teenage secretary may have had a plausible motive. Charlesworth's investigation is complicated by his love-at-first-sight for one of the beautiful saleswomen, who is as likely to be the killer as any of the others.

Set in the 1930s, a vintage British mystery with a very feminine setting.
