Three children have been the lone survivor, whilst all other members of their family have perished. They have gone to live with other families and those families have been killed while they survive. They end up at Evensong, a special residential school for children with a common denominator - murder. All have lost one or more family member to homicide. The security is high and they receive an excellent education. The premise is that there is evil in the world, be prepared. They are members of the Mephisto Society. Strange things start to happen after the arrival of the last member of the trio. Maura is there to visit Julian, the sixteen year old who she survived a previous trauma with, a deep friendship developed through their shared ordeal. A two week vacation at Evensong with Julian and his dog, Bear is just what she needs. Before she left Boston, one of her last cases was the autopsies of a family murdered, their foster child being the only survivor. Her curiosity is piqued when she learns about the other two children who have lived through a similar ordeal. The book kept me turning the pages.
