Book #1 in the Writer's Apprentice Mystery series:
Lena London's literary dreams are coming true - as long as she can avoid any real-life villains...

Camilla Graham's bestselling suspense novels inspired Lena London to become a writer, so when she lands a job as Camilla's new assistant, she can't believe her luck. Not only will she help her idol craft an enchanting new mystery, she'll get to live rent-free in Camilla's gorgeous Victorian home in the quaint town of Blue Lake, Indiana.

But Lena's fortune soon changes for the worse. First, she lands in the center of small town gossip for befriending the local recluse. Then, she stumbles across one thing that a Camilla Graham novel is never without - a dead body, found on her new boss's lakefront property.

Now Lena must take a page out of one of Camilla's books to hunt down clues in a real crime that seems to be connected to the novelist's mysterious estate - before the killer writes them both out of the story for good...

My Review: This book was a lot of fun! The characters are interesting, I love Lena as the main character. She gets her dream job working with her favorite author. I loved all the small town characters of Blue Lake, too. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, unfortunately it doesn't come out until May 2017.

Lena London gets her dream job of being an assistant to her favorite author, Camilla Graham. She moves into the author's home situated on a lake in a small town of Blue Lake. While she is helping the author iron out some kinks in the book she is writing, murder happens (of course). The story takes off from there and I don't want to be a spoiler. The story had me from page one. The small town and its people are so typical small town where everyone knows everyone else. I have to say that I honestly wanted to keep reading to find out what happens next. I couldn't guess and I enjoyed the ending along with the promise of another installment. I am waiting! =) In the meantime, I have two others by this author's other series waiting to be read. Yeah!

Thank you JennyC1230 for sharing this one with me. You do pick good ones! I will be signing up for the author's notifications so I don't miss the next one. =)

rabck from dvg; a murder in a small town. Lena gets her dream job, to be an assistant to her favorite murder series author, but she doesn’t expect to trip over a dead body on the beach day one. I did want to know how they found Victoria….but I guess that's in a different book.

This one is heading out as part of the wishlist tag game

Nice to see it already has a few readers. :-)

Read this a few months ago and enjoyed it. Can't seem to get out of the habit of NOT writing a review as soon as the last page is turned. Add poor recall to that and I will always be writing this kind of incoherent review. No self-discipline. Sadly.

It was enjoyable, though! :-)

The book and four (!) others have arrived safe and sound. Looks a very nice book, German Shepherds on the cover (I used to have one, 25 kg ago...).
Eponine38, I've learned it long ago that it's best to keep journaling as you proceed, otherwise us elderly ladies will forget what we wanted to say. With mysteries one can't of course comment on anything which might spoil the suspense from future readers, but plot isn't the only thing to comment on, as you will see...
A BIG THANK YOU!

Making more than just a mental note that I've tagged Chania with this TBR-book. I'm currently reading a series of Finnish mysteries written by Jaana Lehtiö, whom I had never heard, but who is a teacher and an official Porvoo-guide. Her mysteries take place in Porvoo and her walking tours take people to places she has mentioned in her books. We have booked a tour for two in 2,5 weeks time and "have" to read at least some of her books beforehand. Found four (out of seven) from the librarary. Luckily they are quite fast reads.
Funnily enough, I opened the book randomly and found a Finnish connection from page 116: A Trivial Pursuit question: "Helsinki is the capital of what country?" They supplied also the correct answer 😊.

Chania's birthday is just around the corner and I ought to post the parcel soon, so I'm trying to put in also promised tags.
The book they are working on with Camilla brings up memories: I've been to Salzburg twice, first time by train on an Interrail-trip in 1991. Lovely but very touristy.
Rhonda the housekeeper had a Fawlty Towers sweatshirt - I went to London in 2019 and attended the Fawlty Towers Dining Experience, which was great fun and nothing to do with the original cast - except for their looks. I am hoping to see John Cleese in Finland in September on his "Last time to see me before I die" -tour, which is being postponed from last year.

Downton Abbey mentioned. In 2018 I visited Highclere Castle where Downton Abbey was filmed. What a lovely place with a tragic history. Lord Carnarvon was the owner of the place and the one who funded the excavations of Tutankham's grave in Egypt. For ten years they had been digging and had found only a sarcophagus of a cat. Then they found the jackpot, he saw the treasures but didn't live long enough to learn whose grave they had found - he died six weeks later, due to blood poisoning having cut himself shaving!
His father had been a MP and the constitution of Canada has been signed in that very same house.

Camilla and Lena were discussing the ending for The Salzburg Train - wandering through mountains. I had just time to think "Just like in Sound of Music" when Camilla said so herself.
I've been Salzburg twice, in 1991 by train, interrailing. In 2012 for the European Winner Dog Show. Lovely town, but very touristy.

Lena was compaining about her cold bathroom and chilly toilet seat - welcome to my world! It is -15 C outside and +11 C in my bathroom... I'm not the least tempted to sit and read there...

Journal Entry 19 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, February 10, 2021
Finished last night. I wonder if the next book will pick up from where this ended. What the motive was for the murder wasn't quite clear to me, but I also kept forgetting who was who... Too tired?

Thank you! I opened this (and lots of other books!) a bit early, still two days to go to my birthday. I will work on late shift then, so today is better for presents!

This book has magic words on the cover.... "First in a new series!" I'm always thrilled to start new series, or at least the first book, and then keep wishing for the rest if it is nice!
