Review:
In Moscow, a sheaf of military secrets changes hands. If it arrives at its destination, and if its import is understood, the consequences could be cataclysmic. Along the way it has an explosive impact on the lives of three people: a Soviet physicist burdened with secrets; a beautiful young Russian woman to whom the papers are entrusted; and Barley Blair, a bewildered English publisher pressed into service by British Intelligence to ferret out the document's source. A magnificent story of love, betrayal, and courage, The Russia House catches history in the act. For as the Iron Curtain begins to rust and crumble, Blair is left to sound a battle cry that may fall on deaf ears.

Purchased in the general store in Tharwa, ACT.

I read the first few chapters, but it's slow going and I became bored with it. I moved to a book I would enjoy more. Very male, very British of a certain era, which doesn't mean the book got it wrong; more likely it got it right for the era it was set, but the read was not for me, as an excluded female. It did make me think of what I have read about people employing people 'like them', not necessarily the best person, but a person like them. In this case it would have been male, who came from a 'certain' level of society, private school education, etc. "For a long moment, while Brock stood off observing them, Ned and Barley appraised one another as only Englishmen can who are of the same height and class and shape of head." The one secret service man (and they are all male a far as I read) who is not portrayed as 'upper' class, is the American. "It would certainly have been Clive's taste, for Clive was only middle class in the sense that he was unaware there was a better taste."
I can't say much more, as I put the book down, pulled out my book mark (a Turkish imitation carpet ribbon) and moved the book mark to a replacement book.
