I just found this book and was surprised at how old it was. I recall that I bought this book way back when I was still gainfully employed. Unfortunately for my reading habits, I was traveling a lot at that time. Normally when I was launched upon a trans-oceanic commercial flight, I preferred to take a pile of books compressed into an electronic format. I had only read a couple of pages of Rose when one of those trips came up. I left this copy at home to be read later.

Well, this week "later" arrived when I was sorting through my "to-be-read" warehouse. It was about time to read this one.

"Gritty" is a nice word to accurately describe the plot of this book. If you have ever longed to get a job as a coal miner, this book might help you in making that decision. One quote from the book indicates that coal miners already know what their grave will look like.

The story is about an investigator (Jonathon Blair) who has been tasked with discovering the whereabouts (or possibly the remains of) a youngcleric, John Maypole. There are many twists in the plot of this book, but you already knew that if you have read previous books by this wonderful author.
