I got this book just for Bookcrossing and will read and or release, I don't know which yet!
In 1536, Anne Boleyn, wife of Henry VIII, is to be beheaded. The King brings over from France a renowned executioner to do the job properly. Jean Rombard is the executioner chosen for the important task. Anne, just prior to the execution asks one favor of Jean-- that her hand (the one with six fingers) is buried at a sacred crossroad in France.
Jean agrees but an eyewitness, Archbishop Giancarlo Ciba, sees him cut off the hand and arranges that Jean be robbed and left for dead. Jean, remembering his oath to Anne, is determined to get back the hand and bury it at the sacred location. The rest of the book concerns his quest to fulfill that promise.
Along the way he acquires friends who are willing to help him on the quest and of course trouble follows them.
An interesting read and now heading off as part of the Tag Game.

The package arrived safely today, with both wishlist-tag books - many thanks!
I'd enjoyed Shakespeare's Rebel by this author, and noticed a passing reference in that book to the main character's grandfather, who'd beheaded Anne Boleyn - a bit awkward, as the main character was talking with Queen Elizabeth at the time that the revelation came up! I thought I'd like to read about that character, and am delighted to have this book!
Later: Okay... Hmm. The period details and action/adventure bits were entertaining, and I've often enjoyed books that mingled magic and curses with historical characters, but somehow I didn't find the whole "Anne Boleyn's Hand" stuff very compelling. Quite the contrary, in fact; I think I'd have enjoyed the book more if that entire subplot was left out - or at least altered to something a bit easier to swallow, such as Anne giving a keepsake to Jean that he thought was just a memento but that contained some document that would threaten the throne...
Ah, well! As I said, the historical bits were entertaining, and poor Jean's trials and tribulations - starting when we meet him, a groaning prisoner in a gibbet where he's been left to die - are certainly exciting. But the demon-summoning scenes and all that, not so much. Perhaps someone else will enjoy it!
