Found this in a box of my books - for some reason its never been registered. Well - soon mended! This looks like a good read - looking forward to it.
Why is it that non-horsey people suddenly take it into their heads to ride around Britain, or do some other marathon ride? Maybe it's because us truly horsey people realise exactly what that entails and wouldn't wing it quite so much. This isn't the first book I have read where someone who barely rides (ie. had a few lessons as a child), with little skill or knowledge, decides on raising money in such a way... and somehow, they manage to get away with it. George, a Shire horse trained to pull drays, is roped into be the equine party of this escapade ... and soon has a rubbed back (oh, just ride without a saddle!) and suspected azoturia (a muscle issue caused by too much exercise after a rest), but the show must go on.
so, mini rant over, did I actually like the book? Yes, I did. Apart from raising an eyebrow at the dubious horse care throughout, I enjoyed reading about the different places that the author visited. My home town even gets a mention - briefly. As she was recreating the famous ride by Celia Fiennes (as in the nursey rhyme Banbury Cross), I liked the way that she quoted from the original log, comparing what Britain is know to what it looked like back then. I would have liked some more photos, but the illustrations are sweet.
A good read in the end.
