The Girl With All The Gifts

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class.
When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite. But they don't laugh.
Melanie is a very special girl.

Wow. For some reason, this was not what I was expecting from this book - zombies? Bloody brilliant.
I've read so many end-of-world stories, and I have to say that I thought the whole fungal thing a nice twist - completely scary, but something I can't remember being used before. Who'll look at an innocent mushroom in the same way again.
At first you have to feel sorry for the children at the base, but as the story progresses and Melanie begins to realise what and who she is, some of that starts to fade. I really liked the ending - only fairytale princesses need it to be a happy one!
I have to admit that occasionally the author's style grated a little bit, but overall it didn't stop me loving this book. I can't wait to track down the sequel and see where the story goes.
