An interesting book. More in light of when it was written over 50 years ago rather than the way it is actually written

God how I wished to love this. I was so excited, especially with the great reviews on Goodreads. But this book just didn't resonate with me. I've tried to finish it two times and got to about page 230 and just couldn't. I give it a 3 - (almost) finished book, but more a chore than pleasure.

"To fall in love. Or even to have the desire to make love. I think sex flows more sluggishly in all of us than we care to believe, especially men care to believe. The first adventures are usually nothing but a satisfying of curiousuty, and after that one keeps repeating the same actions, trying to find - what?"
^The above quote was about the only one that connected with me.^

The characters are annoying and very unrealistic. Most especially Carol and Therese. Does Therese always find herself in abusive relationships? The only person I kind of liked was Richard but even then he was a bit of a dick. A lot of the information provided in the story is irrelevant. What was Mrs. Robichecks purpose? I mean maybe you find out in the end but its just too dull to continue with.

I'm going to watch the movie with mum tonight as I heard it was done quite beautifully. I'll write here what I thought about it later on!

*update: Just as boring as the book!*

Received today thanks Bookworm-lady! It will have to sit on Mt TBR for a little while but I do actually look forward to whether I'll find it enjoyable or not. Very mixed reviews here :D

Journal Entry 9 by wingtigergirlnzwing at Napier, Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay New Zealand on Sunday, June 19, 2022
I don't know how to review this admirable work. If it wasn't for Patricia Highsmith writing this, giving us a happy ending in a time when lesbian novels usually ended in suicide or heterosexual 'reform', we might not have the warmth and love we are privy to today.
The author writes in her Afterword, back in 1989, that she had much fan mail over the years for this book, with many people thanking her for a story that was very much like their own. I might not have been one of those people in her lifetime (sadly the author is now dead), but this story is also very akin to my own discovery of who I am. I still wish for that happy ending found here in the novel and I probably always will. I leave it to my Ghost to fulfill that one day perhaps.
Yes there are bits that are difficult to stumble amongst here, but persevere dear fellow reader and hopefully you will find the gem you desire...

And for those that wonder what the purpose was of Mrs Robichek to the story? She is a warning of what will become of Therese if she 'settles' rather than chase her desires. That is her purpose :D

Released 1 yr ago (8/14/2022 UTC) at The Little Bookshop in Napier, Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay New Zealand

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I looked to see if this was on anyone's Wishlist, but alas, as of today, it is not on any BookCrossing Wishlist. So I'm leaving this outside 'The Little Book Store', in the 'free' boxes that are frequented by so many readers like me. Hopefully the book is still free and not sitting in the shop wanting to be paid for...my BCID is EVERYWHERE so please let me know you have me, read me and release me somewhere for others to find. Thank you!

I found it in the free bin at the little book store and left it at urititi doc campground.
Another gem from ph and a reminder of how something tolerance for is taken for granted today was treated in the past (and how crazy cheap rent was)

I found this book at DOC's Uretiti campground and had finished it by their Whananaki site. Not sure if they have a library to return the book to yet.
The story is of it's time, and possibly rather dated now. I nearly gave upon it a couple of times but am pleased I stuck with it.
I am heartened at how humanity has and continues to, dismantle many cruel and repressive "social rules". We are all of us valid, worthy and lovable because of, not in spite of, our uniqueness.
