A programme on the Golden Kids at Oxford University seems a frivolous prospect, and Jemima Shore, renowned TV investigator, feels she has better things to work on. But a startling confidence from a stranger changes her mind, and draws her too Lord Saffron, at the centre of the closed world of Oxford Society and its peerage. Handsome, disreputable and overprivileged, he is in fact not what he seems: for Jemima has it on excellent authority that he is a changeling, and no true heir to the Ives' title and fortune.

As her investigations probe deeper, Jemima becomes involved in Saffron's adopted world of expensive pranks, balls and weekend parties, and finds it thick with sinister intrigue and envy.
