The author Georges Bugnet settled in Alberta in 1905 from France. He was also a self taught botanist and spent 25 years breeding roses. He developed the hybrid rose called Therese Bugnet, an apple tree named Paul Bugnet, and a plum Claude Bugnet.
The novel, The Forest, is his best known work based on the author's own experience homesteading in northern Alberta and was published in 1935. It was translated from the original French by David Carpenter.
