Cirque Du Freak: The Manga, Vol. 1

The story deals with young Darren who, with his friend Steve, sneak out to visit the traveling circus of the title - and find that there's a lot more to it than appears at first. Darren is enraptured with Mr. Crepsley's performing spider - he has a thing for spiders - and sneaks backstage to talk to Crepsley about her, only to find that Steve has a request too: he wants to be turned into a vampire!
Crepsley doesn't want to go along with this and sends Steve home, but after Darren makes another visit to "borrow" the spider and it winds up biting Steve, he has to make a deal with Crepsley for the antidote. And it turns out that not only was Steve right about Crepsley being a vampire in the first place, but he's had his eye on Darren the whole time...
Lots of emotional ups and downs here, with characters whose motives are never completely straightforward, even our young hero's.
[There's a 2009 film adaptation that's pretty good. And the TV Tropes page on the series has some entertaining tidbits, but do beware of spoilers.]
