It is a riveting work of detective fiction worthy of Raymond Chandler, and at the same time a profound and unsettling existentialist enquiry in the tradition of Kafka or Borges.

This was my introduction to Auster's work. He clearly writes with a sharp mind and likes to keep the reader on his/her toes. Gradually one got the sense that the three novellas were not independent, a suspicion that was confirmed at the conclusion of the last story.

Although an interesting read, I found the Kafkaesque mood didn't align well with my being on holiday. I'd be interested to read more of his books.

We are on a bicycle tour through Belgium. I left the book on the shelf with free-exchange books at reception when we booked our campsite for the night.
