Although the main character is 15-16 years old during the course of the story, this book reminded me of the Judy Blume classic Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret because it's very much a story about growing up, finding your place, and dealing with hormones. That's not to say this is a book about sex - there is some mention of it, but the story's main focus is on Charlie's awkward place in the social hierarchy of his high school and his struggle to find real friends. He is emotionally immature but very open about his confusion and his feelings of isolation. Ironically, this book was published by MTV, the channel that gives kids the false impression that high school is a series of pool parties held by the most popular kids when their parents are conveniently out of town. This book does an excellent job of illustrating what adolescence can be like. I didn't like the reveal about his aunt, but other than that I liked that the story was a realistic portrayal of a shy boy. On a superficial note, the book was set in 1991-1992 (when I was still in high school) so it was fun to remember what high school was like for me and see some of the pop culture references.
