The Diving Bell and the Butterfly it is such an amazing I just had to buy a second of it so I could have the joy again of releasing it into someone else's life. Here’s a book wherein both the content and production of genuinely deserves the appellation awesome. A fascinating read that’s poignant and hollows out your heart but yet is uplifting too.
---------------------

In December 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby, editor-in-chief of French ‘Elle’ and the father of two young children, suffered a massive stroke and found himself paralysed and speechless, but entirely conscious, trapped by what doctors call ‘locked-in syndrome’. Using his only functioning muscle – his left eyelid – he began dictating this remarkable story, painstakingly spelling it out letter by letter.

The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly describes what Bauby’s life is like after suffering that massive stroke which left him with locked-in syndrome. The novel also details what his life was like before the stroke.

‘Locked-in syndrome: paralysed from head to toe, the patient, his mind intact, is imprisoned inside his own body, unable to speak or move. In my case, blinking my left eyelid is my only means of communication.’

The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly is a translation of the French memoir Le Scaphandre et le Papillon by journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby. Bauby’s book offers a haunting, harrowing look inside the cruel prison of locked-in syndrome, but it is also a triumph of the human spirit.

Thank you for this little gem.

*** 28.10.16edit: I've read this book before and now re-read it. It is not too thick book, but the contents are quite heavy. What an extraoridinary story. I'm taking the book with me to our local meeting tonight.

Beautiful even though the story itself was quite sad. It was exciting to see what can feel and sense just with your mind. It is quite extra ordinary this human body and mind also.

I took the book from LiskoMiettinen last spring. Many of Kuopio bookcrossers had already read this story, so I'm going to release this wild.
