The Adventurist: A Novel

"In the anonymous office park of a modern software company, whip-smart software engineer Henry Hurt is a man in the middle: of life, of career, and of self-assessment. Mired in his corporate responsibilities, Henry's deathless office existence is torpedoed by the loss of his mother.
Haunted by her death, and by a strange angst he describes as "the pall," Henry seeks escape in a quest for love and purpose occasioned by a crisis in his company's fortunes. Dodging an Iago-like rival, one who stirs him to the decisive action of the book, he risks his livelihood, endangers his bond with his family, and is forced finally to confront the urgent question of his life." (description from its Amazon page)
Good God this was the dullest book I've encountered in a while. Super pretentious, too. I'll still be BCing this one to see if it finds a home where it is loved, but for the life of me I can't see why anyone would like it.
Edit: it's now February of 2020, and I've seen copies of this book floating around at Dollar Tree. Nobody has been buying it. Dollar Tree sometimes has gems (like Here I Am by Jonathan Safran Foer--I love all his books), but for the most part, they get garbage novels that won't sell. I am not surprised this was found here.
The copy I'm crossing is an Advanced Review Copy (ARC). The final version came out at the end of April.
