Now how's that for serendipity? This has been on my "to buy" list for ages, and I'd quite forgotten about it till someone mentioned it on an LT thread last week, saying it was the best book they had ever read (a sentiment echoed by several others). I looked it up on bookdepository and decided to wait a while before I bought it, because I had several orders in already.
Then today I went down town to the post office, and made a little detour to our public Book Box just to tidy it up (because I have taken a solemn vow not to take any more books out of it till my TBR piles shrink a bit). And there, right in front of my eyes, was the Book of Ebenezer Le Page, as if it had been put there just for me. I'd like it even better if the typeface were bigger but as my mother always said, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

The reminiscences of an old Guernsey man who has spent his entire life on the island, ending in around the 1960s. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, irreverent, down-to-earth, quite remarkable. An era, a people, an island that no longer exist.
