Nine short stories that create a compelling picture of Sri Lanka, a country of teaming natural beauty and a society in turmoil.

Journal Entry 2 by kiwiinengland at Wellington City, Wellington Province New Zealand on Tuesday, May 3, 2016
Some of these stories resonated more with me than others, but they were all really well crafted and let me see some of the issues that existed for Sri Lanka during various times. The stories are all set in personal domestic settings, with the outside turmoil of riots, coups, and political instability impacting these small arenas.

If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. I would love it if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it.

Thank you so much!

I've never read anything from Sri Lanka, so I look forward to read this book!

Well, the stories are fairly OK. But if I had borrowed the book on the library, I would might have delivered it back after reading one short story. The stories didn't really "catch me", making me want to continue reading. But anyway, I decided that I would finish reading the book before I passed it on.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Beautifully written and a quick(ish) read, but none of the stories were particularly memorable. I read it yesterday but wouldn't be able to name one single story that would still linger in my head afterwards... Still, I'm interested in reading something else from this author as I did enjoy his writing style.

Once again the book is travelling to the next winner of Authors from unusual countries -sweepstake :) Congratulations!

Interesting.
I've previously read a book from Sri Lanka which I found rather confusing, thus I do wonder what this will give me. Thank you very much for passing it on.

I have to agree with the previous readers, none of the stories stay with me. On the other hand, I quite enjoyed some of them, others I did find a wee bit confusing.
Nice quick read, though.

I’ve stayed away from home most of the time lately but returned there for one night yesterday evening. And there was Monkfish Moon waiting for me. A couple of years ago, I read Reef by Gunesekera, and that’s why I’m quite intrigued. Thank you so very much, Haugtussa!

Now, I’m in the habit of checking if the book has been nominated for some awards. It wasn’t so easy this time because the lists I found seem to be a bit vague and contradictory. Anyway, I’m pretty sure about this:
New York Times Notable Book 1992
1993 Commonwealth Writers Prize, shortlist
