I finished this book more because I had to know what happened than because I enjoyed it. I hadn't read any other William Monk novels, but I don't think it's necessary. However, I could tell there was a bit of a love triangle among Monk, Rathbone, and Hester Latterly.
Hester Latterly interested me far more than Melville's case, and certainly more than the Lamberts. I did feel sympathy for Melville. However, it was Hester and her patient Gabriel who really told a compelling story.
