When I read that a book had been made of the wonderful El laberinto del fauno movie, I absolutely wanted to read it. Luckily, I was chosen to read the book for a reading group on Hebban.nl and so I received a copy. When I got it in the mail, I was amazed by the stunning cover, and when I opened the book, I saw it also had beautiful illustrations inside. Simply wonderful!
I had last seen the movie several years ago, so I was curious how much I would remember of the story. It turned out that I still remembered the main story lines, but I had also forgotten quite a lot, and those bits came back to me while reading the book. This book also had some extra stories that weren't in the movie (unless I'm really mistaken here), and although I liked these extra bits, I did also feel those slowed down the pace of the main story of the book.
Unfortunately, coinciding with the reading of this book, unexpectantly, something not so pleasant happened in my life, but because I was reading the book for a reading club, I did want to finish it on time, and so I did keep on reading. Maybe because of that I was a bit distracted, but I felt the book didn't manage to enchant me as much as the movie had years ago. But to be fair, that could very well be due to what was going on in my life at the moment, or to me already knowing the movie and therefore, comparing the book to that.
So, in short, I did really enjoy the book, and I absolutely loved the cover and illustrations, but I felt that reading it wasn't as magical for me as seeing the movie was years ago.

Het is een prachtige uitgave, dit exemplaar. Ik kan niet goed in het verhaal komen, mogelijk omdat het in het Engels is geschreven. Dus heb ik het nu in het Nederlands gereserveerd bij de plaatselijke bibliotheek en het Engels exemplaar doorgegeven aan een jonge vrouw die veel in het Engels leest.
