Softcover that came to me in a box of books a friend would like for me to share through bookcrossing.
From the Publisher
No one in the small lumber town of Calder Springs, tucked away in the remote setting of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, was prepared for the news. When the men of the village left for another day of work at the lumber mill, they did not know their lives would be dramatically changed.

But without warning the mill closing was announced. The local timber supply was gone, and the harsh reality was that no mill would open to replace what was lost. Without the lumber industry, the town would die—they had seen it happen before…. No jobs, no future, and worthless homes on their hands. The best anyone can hope for is to relocate and start over.

John and Julia Harrigan had lived a tranquil, prosperous life in Calder Springs. The death of the town involves John’s work, their lovely home and a bright future for their daughters. Raised in the East and educated in a fine school, Julia Harrigan seemed an unlikely candidate to change the grim reality. But by the grace of God and for the sake of John and her children, Julia decides they must find a way to save the town and home they love.

Join Julia in discovering new depths of faith and hope in God.

Drove down to Colorado Springs this afternoon to visit my 90-year old grandmother. The Colorado Springs MeetUp had already happened another day, but Siriradha agreed to meet me for dinner tonight, so we had our own little Colorado State MeetUp at Bennigan's! She brought her chicken mask as promised (some people wear a red corsage; some people carry a chicken mask!), and she gave me this book to read and pass on.

P.S. she treated to dinner! Thanks, Siriradha!

This was an interesting look at a small Canadian lumber town and what happened/happens when the lumber runs out. Julia being from the East, genteel, a little spoiled, and liking nice things seemed kind of cliche. Either that, or because Janette Oke's 'Canadian West' series is *so* good; this was a little weak.

It seemed as if some of the minor characters could have been developed more, and this almost felt like a short story in terms of character development, but it was still pleasant to read and interesting to learn about another time and place.

Am trying to think of an appropriate release spot. Perhaps in church this weekend . . .

Journal Entry 6 by Antof9 at Lutheran Church of the Master in Lakewood, Colorado USA on Sunday, October 31, 2004
Released on Sunday, October 31, 2004 at about 2:00:00 PM BX time (GMT-06:00) Central Time (US & Canada) at Lutheran Church of the Master in Lakewood, Colorado USA.

RELEASE NOTES:

Well, it's Sunday morning and there are lots of cars in the parking lot. This ought to be snapped up by the time the sermon is over :) I didn't have the nerve to go in a church I'm not attending on a Sunday morning, so I left it outside on the "curb" in front of several cars (see the pic). We call this church the Master of the Universe church :) and it's also our polling place. We'll be back on Tuesday!

This is release #66 in the Release Challenge.

If you are new to BookCrossing and find this book and this site; welcome! Enjoy the site, the book and hopefully the BookCrossing community. I hope you'll join BookCrossing (doesn't cost anything to join!) and if you do, please consider using any previous reader of this book, or me, Antof9, as the member who referred you. If you are an old hand at BookCrossing, thanks for picking up the book! Either way, I hope you'll journal so all the previous and future readers can track this book's journey. Thanks, and Happy Crossing!

My son's preschool class is held in a church. It was lying on a table near the exit door. I read inside the cover how I could take it home and read it. What a wonderful idea! I work in a Denver hospital and may release the book there, or in my church.
