7 out of 10

This novel takes place, mostly in London, during the war between 1939 and 1942. Mary North is 18 years old and very idealistic. She comes from an aristocratic family, which she defies whenever she can. Mary becomes involved with a civil servant, Tom Shaw. She is also drawn to Tom's best friend, Alistair Heath. When both men leave to serve their country during the war, everything changes for them. Both men endure horrors not to believed, while Mary is injured during her stint as an ambulance driver. As time goes on, Mary starts to pick up the pieces of her life and move on.
The writing is vivid, the story intense. A bit slow in the beginning but soon grabs you.
Will be passing on to a friend, then make it available.
07/22/16 returned and is now available.
