Mumbai, murder and a baby elephant combine in a charming, joyful mystery for fans of Alexander McCall Smith and Rachel Joyce.

On the day he retires, Inspector Ashwin Chopra discovers that he has inherited an elephant: an unlikely gift that could not be more inconvenient. For Chopra has one last case to solve...
But as his murder investigation leads him across Mumbai - from its richest mansions to its murky underworld - he quickly discovers that a baby elephant may be exactly what an honest man needs.
So begins the start of a quite unexpected partnership, and an utterly delightful new series.

Thoroughly enjoyed this rather unusual ''crime story '' set in Mumbai. Fabulous characters, a clever story with a lovely subtle sense of humour. Looking forward to following more of Baby Ghanesh's adventures !

Very readable if slightly bonkers! The idea of tailing a suspect with an elephant in tow, taking it on escalators, in lifts and having it sleep in your 15th floor apartment - Just an everyday occurrence with an elephant :)

A gentle paced mystery which owes much of its charm to the fact it features an elephant. The crime storyline wasn’t very strong but for me that didn’t matter as the mystery came second to the wonderful descriptions of Mumbai, the quirky characters in Chopra’s world….& of course who doesn’t love a baby elephant!

There was a nice thread of humour that I liked, with this particular early passage making me smile:
"Chopra had never seen eye to eye with his mother-in-law. In part this was literally true, due to the fact that she possessed only one eye, having lost the other in a disagreement with a cockerel many years earlier…" :o)

A pleasant read even if, as, brunton11, said it’s slightly bonkers but the endearing characters mean that I’ll be happy to read more.
