An economics professor sees people in his county (Bangladesh) dying of starvation and starts to ponder what the solution could be. The very poor are stuck in near slavery conditions because they have no money, no assets and, therefore, no credit from banks to change their situation. He and his grad students begin an experiment to provide small loans to help individuals to escape often abusive arrangements with the vendors who let them buy supplies on credit only if they sell their products back to them at unfair prices. Overcoming initial distrust, the program spreads to other villages and eventually to other nations.
