Scandalous Transcendental love letters lead to a shocking double murder
The peaceful town of Concord, Massachusetts, is best known as the birthplace of the American Revolution and the home of the Transcendentalists—Thoreau, Emerson, and the Alcotts. Then some letters surface suggesting that the famous thinkers did more together than think, and two of Concord's prominent citizens end up dead. It's up to Lieutenant-Detective (and Emersonian scholar) Homer Kelly and the beautiful Mary Morgan to piece together the bizarre clues and catch a transcendental murderer.
”I've never read a mystery novel that makes more loving and evocative use of its local than this one.”
”Thoroughly literate, deep in Concord, Massachusetts, allusiveness, wonderfully suspenseful.”
About the author:
Jane Langton was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1922. She received her B.A. in Astronomy from the University of Michigan and her M.A. in the History of Art from Radcliffe College. She is the author of several children's books and has written for Children's Digest and The New York Times Book Review. My friend Toss sent me a bagful of crime stories to be read and/or released. This first Homer Kelly book was among them. I don't know Jane Langton, have never heard of Homer Kelly or visited Massachusetts let alone Concord—I'm truly interested and would very much like to read the book before releasing it. We'll see if I find time to do it.
Edited to add on March 1 that this book is reserved as my One book a month in March.

I think this book would have been more entertaining for someone into the American Revolution. For me, it would have been better if the author had introduced the characters more gradually. There is a list of characters in the beginning but it gets frustrating if the story does not introduce the characters enough so that you don’t have to keep going back to the list. But I guess the main issue I had with this story was that the author had the habit of ending a chapter with something that made me think the plot is thickening and then in the next chapter act like nothing had happened. Despite the complaints it wasn’t all bad and if I ever come across another Homer Kelly mystery, I’ll be more than happy to read it to see if and where the main character evolves.
