The author's life story is as tragic and powerful as her novel (or double-novel). Her family fled the Bolsheviks, losing everything, and eventually arrived in France, where the author became a well-known novelist. After the Nazis invaded France, Ms. Nemirovsky was whisked away and died a month later at Auschwitz. Suite Francaise is story about the Nazis in France, about war, and about how people in France behaved under the pressure of war and occupation. Both loving and frightening, startlingly real, and a dark look into the soul of mankind. Terrific book.
