I found this fair-condition softcover on the book-swap shelf in the Tyngsboro MA post office. It's a riveting, involving, unnerving, and ultimately hopeful memoir by a young South African man who suffered a mysterious illness at age 12 that left him comatose and unresponsive for years - until, slowly, his consciousness returned to him. But he was still unable to communicate, and spent several more years in a "locked in" state, aware of his surroundings and what people were saying and doing nearby, but without their realizing this. [This is pretty much my worst nightmare, so the whole story kept me riveted.]

One caregiver finally did notice that his eyes were following her, and managed to get him some clinical testing with different forms of communication devices, and finally - finally! - he was in contact with the world again. Still severely handicapped, he didn't let this stop him, and with the help of his family, he managed to catch up on missed education, find a job, and become an advocate for others with disabilities that restricted their ability to communicate. And then he fell in love...

The book darts between his memories of dawning awareness, his current life and achievements, many scenes of care and helpfulness - and, yes, a few of pretty nightmarish treatment by appalling caregivers, though he was fortunate that most of his caregivers were responsible and helpful. He doesn't skip the stresses that his illness had on his own family, but luckily his parents' marriage survived and his relationship with them and his siblings remains strong. And, yes, there is a happy ending!
