Journal Entry 1 by trygvasson from Hamburg - Hohenfelde, Hamburg Germany on Thursday, February 26, 2004
A classic adventure story - really classic since this is one of the first in this genre. A prototype (along with Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island", written just a few years earlier) of the modern adventure-action story.
It is interesting to see the book in its historical perspective - 1885. The source of the Nile barely discovered - Stanley still alive - but Africe still was a more or less blank area on the map. Colonialism in full swing - the descriptions of an elephant hunt and a few condescending remarks on the "kafirs" are quite telling.
This is Haggard´s first novel and it tells the adventures of Allan Quatermain (this is where Indiana Jones comes from, I guess), Sir Henry Curtis and Captain John Good. They search for Sir Henry´s brother - who has disappeared while searching for King Solomon´s treasure.
Offered in book relay - It´s on the Map

Received in a BookRelay. Thank you! I'm looking forward to reading this. After reading The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, I'm interested in checking out the source for Allan Quatermain.

Received this in a box full of books from Nillabreen. Thanks so much! These will be released at the OBCZ soon.
