This book is an interesting insight into the life of an Indian family. The oldest daugther Uma turns out to be unfit for marriage and is consequently trapped at home with her parents. Her sister Aruna is much more successfull in aquiring appropriate suitors. And brother Arun is expected to study abroad, in the culturally very different USA.
The author manages to convey a picture full of details for all of the characters and their experiences, giving different perspectives on the family's life.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
On the book buffet
To be released in the reading area of Abu Dhabi airport.
Read another copy some five years ago, those were my thoughts about it then:
It made me think of Anna Karenina - "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
Brilliant descriptions of family life, the traditional role of women, family control. I loved the way Desai is able to convey the atmosphere, it's all very subtle, with a lot of detail. Recommendable.
