Journal Entry 1 by amberC from Darwin, Northern Territory Australia on Saturday, January 30, 2016
The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web-design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. But after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest. The customers are few, and they never seem to buy anything―instead, they "check out" large, obscure volumes from strange corners of the store. Suspicious, Clay engineers an analysis of the clientele's behavior, seeking help from his variously talented friends. But when they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, they discover the bookstore's secrets extend far beyond its walls.

I give up on very few books, but I'm afraid this is one of the few. I was looking forward to it, I tried hard, I gave it 75 pages, but sadly, nope.

Unfortunately for me the book came across as annoying in its style and tone rather than engrossing, not very well written with flat cardboard characters, immature, and overall just trying too hard. I could go on, but in the service of brevity, and not wishing to be too unkind, I'll admit that I guess I'm just not this book's target audience. I'm not a twenty-something nerdy, geeky guy who is surrounded by nerdy, geeky friends who can pop up and be extremely useful when required.

I understand many folk love this one, and yes it's quirky, but it's just not me.

Hmmm...I've been looking forward to receiving this book the most but I've just read what crimson-tide wrote about it. I still really want to read it, I just *hope* we have different reading taste and I'll love it the way I want to love it...oh the pressure!

I actually enjoyed this book. How did I enjoy it? I let go of my love of book stores while I read it. If I hadn't, I would have been annoyed when they closed it, never to be used as a book store again. This story starts in a book store, true. But don't think it is actually going to be about the book store or its inhabitants, because it isn't. Read with warnings in mind I enjoyed the journey, even if fraught with my never having enough time to read it.
