I'm a huge Discworld Fan. I have all the books and not willing to part with them as I reread them as often as time lets me. I picked this book up because I was in withdrawl from Pratchett reading. It's good, but not as good as the Discworld books.

Apparently Strata was written as an expoloration of the idea that would become Discworld (from the back cover).

From the back cover:

"Kim Arad is a high-ranking official of the company after twenty-one decades of living, an with the help of memory surgery, she is at the top of her profession. Discovering two of her employees have placed fossilized plesiosaur in the wrong stratum, not to mention the fact it is holding placard which reads, 'End Nuclear Testing Now,' doesn't dismay the women who built a mountain range in the shape of her initials during her own high-spirited youth.

But then came the discovery of something which did intrigue Kin Arad. A flat earth was something new..."

Guess what the flat earth is!?

You can definitely see the beginnings of the Discworld in this book, but it's probably one best read keeping in mind that it's not part of the same series. It'll do in a pinch (and reminds me a bit of HHGTTG with whoever it was Slaribartfast worked for) if you've got a Pratchett/Discworld craving.
