Critics have described this book as "indulgent fluffery," and while I agree that it is indeed lighter fare than, say, Noam Chomsky, I felt it was a worthwhile endeavor that kept me engaged to the end. His musings on history tasted like Tom Robbins, although Eugenides' seemed based more on fact than supposition (and I'm not knocking Robbins -- he's a trip, and I always enjoy his embellished interpretation of history). If nothing else, how many Great American Novels are set in Detroit without focusing on the automotive industry?

On a side note, if you watched the movie of "The Virgin Suicides" (Eugenides' other novel), check out Air (French Band) who did the soundtrack; their album "Moon Safari" set the standard for electronic lounge back in '97.
