This good condition paperback was bought from a charity shop in Cromer, Norfolk.
From the back cover:- London 1844, and a shy young woman has arrived to take up a new situation in the grandeur of no 50, Wimpole Street. Subtly and compellingly, Lady's Maid gives voice to Elizabeth Wilson's untold story, her complex relationship with her mistress, Elizabeth Barrett, and her dramatic role in the most famous elopement in history."

REVIEW:- I really enjoyed this book although it was quite depressing at times and maybe overlong. I really sympathised and empathised with Wilson as she devotedly attended to her mistress but was always made to understand her station in life i.e. maid and not friend. Wilson suffered greatly in her family life and the book gave a great insight into the life of a Lady's Maid at the time and the meagre pittance paid to servants in her position making it nigh impossible for them to improve themselves or to start an independent existence. It also exposed the great divide between the moneyed and favoured upper class and the poorer classes before the days of Social Services and the now much-maligned NHS in the UK.
I thought Margaret Forster drew the main characters extremely well and I loved the letters from Wilson to her family and friends which were so revealing and expressive."
The book will now be sent off to another bookcrosser in gratitude for her sending me a wishlist book recenty-Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult.

This has made its way back to me after a trip to my aunt :-)
21 Jan 19 - I confess I know very little about poetry so was not al familiar with the Brownings. In fact I was quite a wayinto the book before I realised that this is based on true events. It started off pretty well, and despite not being my normal type of read, I found myself enjoying it. It was only as the book progressed that I started to feel it was becomming a bit repetitive. I understand times were hard and very different but, the some topics seemed to be dwelled on for far too long in my opinion. The relationship between Mrs Browning was quite interesting and at times I was shocked at how Wilson was treated by the pair. Overall a slightl6 depressing read but not bad, it probably could of been quite a lot shorter.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Left this book in the big LFL in Vasse.
Een heel mooi boek. Ongelofelijk zoals die vrouw zich ten dienste stelt van haar misstress en haar persoonlijke leven ondergeschikt maakt. Hartverscheurend dat ze daardoor zelfs haar kind kwijtraakt.
