well, an election year and this book hits my hot little hands. Being a cynical voter, Atwood's book has particular resonance. With the conflict in Irag and the polarized political situation in the US, The Handmaid has a lot to offer. I have not seen the cinematic adaption, will make time this winter. I had forgot the impact of good speculative fiction, and what it has to tell us about the society we currently live in. Definitively not far fetched, Germany of the 1930's and mid 40's illustrates that, a modern industrial society not unlike Gilead, except state sponsored religion vs a narrow interpretion of the Old Testament. Beware politics and religion traveling in the same chariot. Register to vote ands exercise that vote.
The preceding political statement was NOT approved by any of the candidates! ;o))
I give up. I tried for 150 pages to get into it, but it moved a little too slow and in circles. I was interested in finding out how society got to this point, but it definitely seemed to be a turtle's race to the finish. I will not rate the book as I did not finish it. Oh well :o(
