Journal Entry 1 by InvisibleAng from Belfast, Co. Antrim United Kingdom on Tuesday, December 8, 2015
This turned out to be the perfect book to start reading on the train down to London during a recent holiday. Ben Aaronovitch clearly loves the place and the people, but his version of London is also overlaid with unquiet ghosts, anthropomorphic personifications of particular places (like the rivers of the title), and one very overworked Detective Inspector whose job it is to keep the lid on supernatural crime and disturbances, and to liaise with his colleagues in the Met about the same. Hence the recruitment of Constable Peter Grant: narrator, ambitious young copper, and now, apprentice wizard.

The thing that really carries this book is character voice: no matter what happens, you believe that these are real people, and particularly real cops. It's very well observed, very funny, and by the end, you care about everyone in it. A great start to a compelling series.
