From the back cover:- "What happens when innocence is confronted by monstrous evil? Nine-year old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country. He resents being moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to one in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do and no-one to play with. Then he meets Shmuel who lives on the other side of the adjoining fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas."
I started to watch the film of this book but didn't like how it was done. I am finding the book much more to my liking, 58 pages in. Will review it when I get to the end.
REVIEW:- "Wow-what a book this is-very simply written and easy to read but extra shocking by being written from the point of view of 9 year old Bruno whose father was helping to run Auschwitz death camp. His naivety and friendship with Schmuel who lived "on the other side of the fence" was well described and I'm still reeling from the ending.
I started to watch the film some time ago but didn't like how it was done so didn't watch much of it nor find out what happened further into the story. I thought the book would be better and it certainly was although it brought me to tears more than once. We must never forget that although this was fiction, these horrific things really happened, not that long ago."

My husband has now also read this book and comments as follows:- "An easy read. A well thought-out and original way of telling the horrific story of Auschwitz".
I am now reserving the book for two friends who I will be meeting up with at the weekend.

This book was given to my friend Sylvia when we met to celebrate her birthday. She may eventually pass it on to our mutual friend Audrey D and it may end up in Portugal somewhere along the line. Who knows??
