From the back cover:
Welcome to a surreal version of Great Britain, circa 1985, where time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem, militant Baconians heckle performances of Hamlet, and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection, until someone begins kidnapping characters from works of literature. When Jane Eyre is plucked from the pages of Brontë's novel, Thursday must track down the villain and enter the novel herself to avert a heinous act of literary homicide.

Just couldn't put this one down.

Lent this one to Candy80 in BC-meeting in Helsinki 3.8.04.

Edit: I bought another copy, so I won't need this one back.

I loved this book. Jasper Fforde has created a whacky world, I loved the cloned pets (dodos are cute!), time-travel, and the alternative history! But the most original invention by the author must be how all the people are so interested in literature! Literature is like sports is in our world, only even more important. I don't know what to say, except that I'm now a Jasper Fforde fan. I will definitely read all his other books too!

Wonderful ! I couldn't get into the book easily but at the end, I didn't want it to be finished. Like CandyDarling, I also liked the dodos and time traveling is just marvelous though I could never figure out, how could Thursday's dad bring the plays for Shakespeare? After all someone must have written them. "going crazy" 8) The part I didn't like about the book was "the reunion" of Thursday and Landen... hmmm, where's the original book ? It needs some changes. ;)

RELEASE NOTES:

Journal Entry 6 by lostbookisland on Monday, September 25, 2006
This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.

All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.

It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
